Fuori Salone 2013

An overdose of design during the Milano Design Week.  From 9th- 14th of april Urban Fair visited Salone di Mobile and also many design events ‘outside’ of the Design Fair. Young designers and graduates from design academies all over the world, presented themselves at  Fuori Salone. Contemporary and raw areas like Zona Tortona, Venture Lambrate, Spazio Rosanna Orlandi, Brera, Cascina Cuccagna and Fabbrica del Vapore changed into inspirational design environments.

The main theme of the Young Designers at Fuori Salone and Salone Satelite was: ‘Beyond production’ and ‘the purpose of design’. The design talents questioned the purpose of design and researched more authentic and sustainable production technics. They re-thought the way we design and the way we produce. They presented raw materials, new resources, gradient colours and handmade design. Some highlights I would love to share with you:

1. New trends in coffee

a. Copper coffee lab: Linking Process – Exhibition Design academy Eindhoven.             b. Hand pressed espresso, ES no.2: The new (sustainable) single shot puller by Espresso Strietman.

2. Eatable dishes

Beautiful digital crafted ‘roll ware’, a tool to produce eatable dished designed by Joanne Choueiri, Giulia Cosenza, Povilas Raskevicius of the Design Academy Willem de Koning, Rotterdam

3. Handcrafted and natural curved wood

a. Handcrafted backs of the Chiavari chairs. Amazing light weighed, authentic handmade chairs by Fratelli Levaggi, a highy skilled craftsman family from Italy.

b. Boleform exposed their natural curved wooden floor. Because the boards follow the natural shape of the tree, they do safe 20 % of waste.

4. Slow resources and raw materials

Coloured threads of snail poop created by Lieske schreuder of the HKU and her paper eating snails. Some interesting facts: 1 meter = 6 grams snail-excrements = 6 days with 7 snails.

5. Natural processed colours

a. Hydrographic design by Aliki van der Kruijs: new pantone colour pallet printed on a silk scarf, made by rain. b. True colour shelves by Lex pott. Natural colours of copper and organic growth colours by the oxygen process of copper.

After 7 days design, 2848 trend photo’s and 2 trend reports about colours & sustainable design for PANTONE | VIEW about colours in sustainable design, I had a true overdose of design. But I love it!
